They bent over the map, the flickering light of the lamps casting the tired planes of their faces into sharp relief. She watched the three of them, quietly, the two in their scarlet and her Man in His blue. She knew that the fate of their mission hinged on the accuracy of His maps. It was a pivotal moment.

Straightening finally, the leader of the two warriors smiled a weary smile and lifted the goblet of kalana she had brought for them earlier. "It is good, Oryx. Your map shows me new ways of moving around the enemy and surrounding him. You have performed a great service for your homestone this night."

She smiled softly as she saw His lips turn up with pleasure. It had been His life's work committing the details of this land to paper, but tonight had made it worth all the time and effort.

The Caste of Scribes, denoted by their blue robes or tunics, is generally held to be the caste of the scholar. Second only in rank to the Initiates, they fill many roles on Gor. Many specialize in a particular field. They are the bookkeepers, accountants, historians, legal experts, compilers of data, mapmakers, logisticians, mathematicians, and notaries.

Scribes do not fill the role we consider 'typical' for Gorean males, yet those who are men remain very much men OF Gor. Though not Warriors, Scribes will fight, as will any Gorean man, to defend their homestones, their women, or their honor. Consider that an army would be lost without their scribes, and then discount the role they play.

A Scribe's training is mentally rigorous. He or she spends many years of learning, study, and reasoning exercises. Since much legal business is conducted through Scribes, they generally consider it a wise career move to have an unimpeachable reputation, though there are rogues. Furthermore, since the Scribes [Oryx's Sigil] are one of the High Castes, they sit on the governing council of their cities: reason to ensure they have a reputation for honesty.

Each Scribe has a unique sigil or seal with which he stamps his/her works. To the left is presented, as an example, the sigil of Oryx con Lara, a mapmaker/explorer of some note.
