This scroll is based on material originally authored by
Navarre-, First Captain of Kar
and was a part of the Karian Notes. We owe Navarre a considerable
debt of gratitude for his research and writing on this topic.
Some of the information on this page was learned from the S&S Castes Page, which alas
also no longer exists. |
One of the most important aspects which Gorean culture and civilization is based upon is that of caste. Simply put, this means that each person is born into a place, or station in life, and knows absolutely their position in the social hierarchy. While it is not impossible to move from one caste to another, it is very uncommon, because the Gorean is not only accepting of his caste, but extremely proud of it, knowing that no matter how menial or exalted it may appear, each of the castes performs a critical function in society and without which that society would be in danger of collapse.
On IRC Gor, many select a caste to claim as thier own. Obviously, on Earth, there is no such caste system in place. We can find, however, analogies for Gor which match our real life positions. For instance: one who works in a retail store might claim to be of the Merchants, while another who is a paramedic will claim to be of the Physicians, or one who is in the military may call the caste of the Warriors his own. The well-known Scribe, Oryx con Lara, is in real life a Wordcrafter, a senior technical and marcom writer, as well as text craftsman and web technician.
All Goreans have a caste, based on birth and profession, except for 1:45-46 four groups:
|
There were only three statuses conceivable to the Gorean mind outside
the caste system: slave, outlaw, and Priest-King. A man
who refused to practise his livelihood or strove to alter status
without the consent of the Council of High Castes was, by definition, an outlaw and subject to impalement.
Book 1, Tarnsman: pp 45-46 |
Priest-Kings considered themselves above the caste system, outlaws and slaves are considered beneath the caste system, and Dar-Kosis victims are considered completely outside it. Presumably these unfortunates at one time had a caste, but since contracting the disease have been shunned by their peers.
There are five High Castes: a representative of each sits on the 1:42 Council of each City. There are numerous Lower Castes: the precise ranking between them has never been completely clear and varies not only from City to City, but at various times as well, as one caste might increase in prominence.
|
These tiers shared the color of that portion of the wall behind them,
the caste colors. The tier nearest the floor, which denoted some
preferential status, the white tier, was occupied by the Initiates,
Interpreters of the Will of the Priest Kings. In order, the ascending
tiers; blue, yellow, green and red were occupied by representatives
of the Scribes, Builders, Physicians, and Warriors.
Book 1, Tarnsman: pg 42 |
In most Cities, the Five High Castes, the Council, elect one person to be Administrator of the City. In war-time, the Council will elect an Ubar, or War-Chief, to lead them. The Ubar (or Ubara if a woman) has absolute dictatorial control of the City. Some cities completely eschew the practice of electing a Ubar. Lara is one of these. The penalty for assuming such a title in Lara is swift and sure: Death by slicing.
Here follows a short list of the Gorean castes, the colors which are associated with each, and the comparative social ranking. Where noted, some castes have individual pages within the Laran Scrolls; and many entries are cross-referenced to their entry in GLUEDOG, The Greater Laran Unabridged Encyclopedia & Dictionary Of Gor
Note that this list is by no means inclusive, nor are the ranks a wholly accurate listing. There are many more castes, and the only ones generally accepted as the listed ranking are that the Assassins are the top ranked Lower Caste (due in large part to fear which is associated with them) followed by the Slavers and and the Merchants. The Peasants are considered the lowest ranked caste, a fact which they are inordinately proud of, as they consider themselves to be "Ox upon which the Homestone rests", knowing full well that without them, Gorean society would collapse.
Understand that these castes and their social rankings are a matter of great import to the Gorean, frequently the centerpiece for political activism or intrigue as one caste strives for prominence over another, or a sub-group within a caste agitates for its recognition as an independant caste, able to make its own rules and guidelines. In this latter case, usually the primary controlling group within a caste does not wish to let the sub-group leave, simply because the more people it governs, the more powerful and prestigious the caste is (the exception to this is that of the largest caste, the Peasants).

Caste of Initiates
To the Laran Scrolls article on Initiates
|
First of the High Castes. The supposed representatives of the Priest-Kings in Gorean society. Responsible for guiding the spiritual life of Goreans through their rituals and prayers to the Priest-Kings. Recognised by white robes, shaven heads and faces, and refusal to eat meat, beans, or imbibe alcohol. Required by caste codes to refuse to touch women, and women are forbidden to touch them. Tend to be learned and well-read, study mathematics for self-purification. A certain distrust between them and Scribes. No known subcastes.
|
Caste of Scribes

|
Second of the High Castes. Scholars of Gorean society, writers and historians.
In their keeping is almost all of the accounting, record-keeping,
and writing upon Gor. Tend to be serious and studious, with an
attention to detail and a passion for knowledge. Their caste color is Blue.
Subcastes include Magistrates, Scholars, Record Keepers, Teachers, Clerks, Historians, Accountants, and Explorer/Mapmakers, and according to some, the Litigators. | Explorer/Mapmakers | Responsible for collecting and disseminating geographical and sociological information, as well as being the diplomatic corps for their City. Sometimes known as the "militant" arm of the Scribes, but no Explorer/Mapmaker will admit that. Reputed to perform "black" or undercover operations of various types for their Cities. | Magistrates | Ajudicate and decide matters of litigation in both crimes and torts. May be the only subcaste to get along with the Litigators, and even then it's usually an advisarial relationship. | Scholars | Collect, research, and teach knowledge for knowledge sake. Tend to be absent-minded, though can get very passionate about obscure points of research. | Teachers | Involved in teaching of all levels of general Gorean Knowledge (especially the Gorean language, both written and spoken) and educating youth | Record keepers | Responsible for maintaining City records of property ownership and bloodlines. Often record sales and debt settlements for Merchants, although the financial (numerical) records are handled by the accoutants. Called upon to be Official Witnesses. | Clerks | Responsible for recording protocols of meetings, for writing corespondance, copying scrolls, and teching penmenship. Many consider other Scribe sub-castes' handwriting an offense to civilization. | Historians | Responsible for maintaining historical records, and teaching the local City-approved version of Gorean History. May not be able to tell the difference; scions of Gorean "doublethink", knowing one thing but thinking (and saying) another. Also called upon for official testamony, though few believe them when acting in this capacity. | Accountants | Maintain bookkeeping records and accounts, and are the repository for the arcane knowledge of double-entry accounting and multiple ledger records. | Litigators | Present cases to Magistrates, and argue for and against the litigants. Many believe that Litigators are also a subcaste of the Scribes, although in some cities (Lara, for instance), Litigators wear the Black of Assassins. And are as well loved.
